I'm thinking about to use the L configuration for my 40m setup, four arms and two standard whips. It takes a bit of playing to get it tuned, but once tuned I get nice DX. The other thing you might want to look at is the vertical dipole configuration in the Files section. You can make a 2m to 40m vertical with only a counterpoise wire / elevated radial. I've done very well with the Buddipole in an L using two arms, two coils, and two whips (one each vertical, one each horizontal). Download Scott Anderson's book (in PDF) Buddipole in the field for free at under the documents section. That's a lot of horizontal weight and leverage. I would be a little concerned about mechanical stability if you're going to be using two arms plus a coil plus a whip on the horizontal section. Regardless, remember that there is no "must" in Buddipole configuration. I have confirmed QSOs while portable that are over 3,300 miles on 40M, over 4,000 miles on 20 & 17, and over 4500 miles on 15M. The Buddipole is a good compromise antenna, but if setup correctly can work very well. I was able to tune 200 kHz of the 40 meter band with SWR below 2.1:1 with the following components, Versatee. Because I live in Southern Nevada, unless I head to the mountains an hour out of town, I do not have any trees to toss a wire over. As most Buddipole users know 40 meters can be a challenge to tune with basic components. Actually, even with the base kit you have to experiment because the tuning will depend on your particular location and exact setup of the Buddipole.įor four arms, it's possible that you'll need some coil, or it's possible you won't, but you have to experiment and see what works best. Spent the day testing different Dipole configuration for 40 meters. Once you go away from the base kit (e.g., four arms as you have), you have to experiment. Always remember that the settings that come with the Buddipole are first approximations based on typical configurations and the base Buddipole kit (two arms, two coils, two whips).
